Tour A - The Square Mile
From the historic sober high walls
of Sir John Soave's Bank of England, to
the brand new glass cladding of the 30 St Mary Axe
skyscraper (the 'gherkin'), the
architecture of the City has always been an expression of
wealth and
quality, mixing the historical and the new in a rich
density of architecture that somehow mangos to co-exist
with a basically medieval pattern of streets, places and
hidden alleys. No other part of London can be so rewarding
to visit. Which ever way one goes there is something of
interest and architecture of merit.
Tour B - Bankside Regeneration
Beginning with the visionary
residential projects of the old Wharfs, this
tour looks at the bold architectural statements that have
made London’s
South bank a world-renowned cultural quarter. From City
Hall and a string of
Millennium projects including the Millennium bridge, to
the modernism of the
Royal Festival Hall and its current redevelopment, find
out how Bank side is
a testament to innovative architecture and successful
urban regeneration.
Tour C - Westminster - Power
and Culture
Showcasing some of London’s most celebrated architects
from the establishment buildings of St James' and
Whitehall to the 80s high-tech of Roger’s Channel 4 HQ,
this tour moves on to discover the new government gems of
the Home Office and Portcullis House, and the revitalised
Somerset House. It culminates in the inspirational Great
Court where London's architectural legacy meets the needs
of a new Millennium.
Tour D - Docklands
The demise of London Docks
produced the biggest urban regeneration challenge
in Europe. Starting at St Katherine's Docks, the
fashionable residential
quarter and Wapping Hydraulic Power Station, this tour
then moves on to the
most successful projects of the business district of
Canary Wharf with its
elegant Jubilee underground station and footbridges.
